MHCLG Announces ‘Scheme Improvements (Access and Protections)’ Consultation
The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has recently launched a further consultation on changes to the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) in England and Wales. This consultation builds on the ‘Access and Fairness’ consultation that closed in August of this year.
All members of the Scheme are invited to respond. The consultation sets out proposals across four key areas that relate to access to the Scheme and its benefits and cover:
- the normal minimum pension age
- LGPS access for mayors and councillors
- academies in the LGPS
- new Fair Deal protections
Alongside this consultation, MHCLG has published draft statutory instruments on pension access for mayors and councillors as well as new Fair Deal:
Draft statutory instrument – Mayors and Councillors
Draft statutory instrument – New Fair Deal
You can view the full consultation documents on the Gov.uk website.
The consultation will last for 10 weeks and closes on 22 December 2025.
You can respond to the consultation online or you can email [email protected].
